We manage your systems so you can manage your business

Nothing can bring your business to a standstill like computer problems and while they may not happen often, when they do all you want is for them to go away. That’s where we come in.

For over a fifteen years HappyMac has provided support for Macintosh and other IT solutions for businesses in Knoxville, Oak Ridge, Johnson City and surrounding Tennessee areas. We understand the frustration and desperation computer problems bring; after all, you’re not in business to fix your tools, and every minute something doesn’t work means lost productivity for your enterprise. Our specialty is making problems go away. We solve computer problems so you don’t have to.

The Macintosh is a different breed of computer, quite different from other platforms. Mac offers a secure computing environment, a stable OS and unique enhancements that make it a powerful creative tool. We know the strengths and quirks of working with Mac so we can help you maximize your productivity and avoid potential pitfalls.

We take personal responsibility to keep your computer systems up and running. Our ultimate goal is to work with you to prevent problems from occurring, but when systems do go down, we’ll be there with speedy response time and as quick a resolution as possible. After all, that’s what we do… we make problems go away.

The State of the iPhone

Yesterday was a big day for the iPhone as Apple announced the new iPhone 4S at their "Let's Talk iPhone" media event. Here's a quick run-down of the state of the iPhone world now:

    • Greatly improved optics and 8 MP Camera
    • 1080p Video Recording w/ image stabilization
    • Siri Voice Assistant
    • World Mode Phone (Works on both GSM and CDMA networks, as long as it's purchased/activated on a CDMA network, otherwise will only work on GSM)
  • Available on AT&T, Verizon and Sprint
  • Pre-Orders Start October 7
  • Released October 14
  • Pricing (w/ 2-year contract):

AppleCare+ for iPhone announced

  • Also provides up to 2 replacements due to Accidental Damage, subject to a $49 service fee per incident
  • $99 vs. $69 for regular AppleCare for iPhone

iOS 5 to be released on October 12 and supports:

  • iPhone 3GS and later
  • 3rd & 4th Generation iPod Touch
  • iPad & iPad 2
  • More information on the features and improvements at: http://www.apple.com/ios/

Looking ahead, there's little to no expectation of the iPhone 5 before the middle of next year, at the earliest. At this point the talk is that the iPhone 5 will be the LTE-capable update, but that current LTE chipsets require a 2-chip solution for the radios, and have significant battery-life issues. The earliest single-chip radio solutions aren't expected until early next year.

Server Tips

Renewing SSL certificates in OSX Server 10.4

One weakness of MacOS X Server 10.4 is how it handles SSL certificates. There is virtually no documentation from Apple detailing the intricacies of creating, importing, and renewing SSL certificates. On the web you will find lots of information about creating new certificates and they all differ in their approach. In our search we found very minimal information regarding renewing certificates.  Other directions were pretty vague and I think that's where a lot of confusion comes into play. I can't say that these steps will definitely work for you any better than the other directions you can find on the internet, but I can say that I have documented every step the best I can as clearly as I can.

Technical Tips

Restarting the ARDAgent remotely via SSH

If you remotely administer Mac OS X systems, you've probably run into this issue before. Your ARD or Screen Sharing session gets interrupted and when you get back in your cursor keeps jumping back to wherever it was in the last session.

If you have SSH access to the machine, there is a simple way to fix that. The only real caveat is that you're connecting as an administrative user, but since you're using ARD and SSH to get to the machine, that's the most likely case.

Simply connect to the machine via SSH and then run the command:

sudo /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/Resources/kickstart -restart -agent

That will restart the ARDAgent and clear out any previous sessions.
